Step-by-Step Tutorial: Using Search & Recover in System Mechanic
If you’ve ever accidentally deleted important files, the Search and Recover tool in System Mechanic can help you quickly restore them. Here’s how to use it.
Step 1: Open System Mechanic
- Launch System Mechanic on your computer and ensure you are on the Performance Dashboard.
Step 2: Access Search and Recover
- From the Performance Home dropdown, select Toolbox, then click on Search and Recover.
Step 3: Set Up Your Search
- In the Search and Recover dashboard, you’ll see options for:
- Search Location: By default, it searches your main drive (usually C:). If you have an external drive connected (e.g., D:), select it. Click on Browse to specify a location if needed. Important: You cannot search and save recovered files to the same drive; choose a different drive for saving.
Step 4: Choose Scan Type
- Smart Scan: Speeds up the search by eliminating irrelevant files.
- Strong Scan: Searches all files, though it takes longer.
For this tutorial, we’ll use Smart Scan. Click on the information icon for tooltips if you need more details about each option.
Step 5: Start the Search
- Click on the Search button to initiate the scan. The search may take a few moments, so you can pause the video or wait for it to complete.
Step 6: Review Search Results
- Once the scan is finished, you’ll see a list of recoverable files with headers including:
- Name, Path, Type, Size, Date Modified, Condition of the File
- You can sort these results by any header, such as by name or size.
Step 7: Select Files to Recover
- To recover files, click Select All to choose everything or manually select specific files you want to restore, like an ActiveX file or an adml file.
Step 8: Recover Selected Files
- After selecting the files, click on the Recover button. The tool will then work to restore the selected files.
Step 9: Locate Recovered Files
- Once the recovery is complete, you can click on View to see where the files have been saved. You should find the recovered files in the location you specified earlier (e.g., your external D: drive).
